The call usually starts the same way. Somebody bought a gas range, or a generator, or they are building an outdoor kitchen off the back patio, and they want to know how hard it is to run a line to it. The honest answer is that running the pipe is the easy part. Sizing it right and getting it inspected is where the job actually lives.
We do this work all over Kilgore, Longview, Tyler, Marshall, and Henderson, and the same handful of things go sideways every time somebody skips those two steps. Here is how a gas line addition really works, from the load calculation through the pressure test.
Why the nearest gas line is usually the wrong place to tap
This is the mistake we get called out to fix more than any other. Somebody wants gas at the patio, there is a line running through the crawlspace eight feet away, so they cut in a tee and run half-inch pipe out to the grill. It lights. Everybody is happy for about a month.
Then the water heater starts short-cycling, or the furnace drops out on a cold night, or the new burner will not hold a flame with anything else running. What happened is that the new appliance is now sharing a pipe that was sized for the old load, and the whole branch is starved.
Gas piping is not like water piping. Volume is what matters, and every appliance downstream of a given section of pipe is drawing from that section at the same time. Add one and everybody upstream of it gets less. The system does not warn you politely. It just runs poorly in ways that look like appliance problems.
How the sizing actually gets figured
Every gas appliance has a BTU rating on its data plate. A residential range might sit around sixty five thousand. A tankless water heater is a lot more than that. A standby generator can be more than the rest of the house combined, and that one catches people, because a generator is not a small appliance hanging off the end of a small pipe.
Sizing works off three things: the total BTU load the pipe has to carry, the developed length from the meter to the farthest appliance on that run, and the gas pressure in the system. Longer runs lose pressure, so a pipe that is plenty at fifteen feet is undersized at sixty. Every elbow and tee adds effective length on top of the measured distance.
Then you work backwards from the meter. Each section of the system gets sized for everything downstream of it, so the trunk near the meter is bigger than the branches. A proper job means measuring the whole existing system, adding up what is already on it, adding the new appliance, and then deciding where the tie-in point goes. Sometimes the answer is a tap fifteen feet farther away on a bigger section of pipe. Sometimes it is a new run all the way from the meter. Sometimes the meter itself is the limit and the gas utility has to be involved before anybody plumbs anything.
That measuring step is the part that gets skipped, and it is the difference between a line that works and a line that works until the weather turns.
Black iron, CSST, and why bonding comes up
Two materials cover almost everything we install in this area.
Black iron pipe is threaded steel, and it is what most existing gas systems in older East Texas homes are built from. It is rigid, it is tough, it takes a hit from a lawnmower or a shovel without much drama, and it is the right call for exposed runs, garage heaters, and anywhere the pipe might take abuse. It is slower to install because every joint gets cut, threaded, doped, and made up by hand.
CSST is corrugated stainless steel tubing, the flexible yellow or black jacketed stuff. It runs through framing in long continuous lengths with far fewer joints, which makes it the practical choice for getting from a meter to a kitchen island or across an attic. It has to be supported correctly, protected with striker plates where it passes through framing, and it cannot be run where it will get stepped on.
The thing to know about CSST is bonding. The tubing wall is thin, and a nearby lightning strike can put enough energy into an ungrounded system to arc through it. Manufacturers require the system to be bonded to the electrical service ground with a properly sized conductor, and code requires it. This is not optional and it is not a detail an inspector overlooks. Around here, where a good spring thunderstorm is routine, we treat bonding as part of the install rather than a step at the end.
Older CSST installed before the bonding requirements tightened is worth having looked at. If you have yellow jacketed tubing in your attic and nobody has ever mentioned a bonding conductor, that is a real thing to check.
The permit and the pressure test
Gas work is permitted work. In most East Texas jurisdictions that means pulling a permit with the local code office before the pipe goes in, and having the work inspected while it is still open and visible.
The centerpiece of that inspection is the pressure test. The new piping gets capped, charged with air to a required pressure, and left to sit while a gauge watches it. The pressure has to hold for a set period with no drop at all. A gauge that creeps down means a joint is leaking somewhere, and the pipe stays open until it is found and fixed. That test is the reason a properly installed gas line is something you can stop thinking about.
Then the inspector comes out, looks at the pipe, the supports, the sizing, the bonding on any CSST, and the test gauge, and signs it off. Only after that does anything get closed up and the gas turned on.
People ask whether the permit is worth the trouble. Two answers, both practical. The first is that the inspection is a second set of eyes on work that can burn a house down, and there is no version of that which is a bad idea. The second is what happens later.
Where unpermitted gas work comes back on you
Unpermitted work does not stay invisible. It surfaces at the two worst possible moments.
The first is selling the house. A buyer’s inspector finds a gas line to an outdoor kitchen with no permit history, and it goes on the report. Now you are negotiating during a closing, either dropping the price or paying to have the work opened up, corrected, and inspected under a deadline you do not control. Retroactive permitting is a lot more expensive than the original permit, because the pipe is now behind finished walls.
The second is a claim. If there is a fire or a gas incident and the investigation finds unpermitted gas work, your carrier is going to be very interested in who did it and whether it was inspected. That is not a conversation anybody wants to have with a house involved.
Neither of those is a scare tactic. They are just the two places where the paperwork turns out to matter, and both of them come long after the day somebody saved a little by skipping it.
What a leak smells like and what to do about it
Natural gas has no odor of its own. The utility adds mercaptan so it smells like rotten eggs or sulfur, and that smell is the whole warning system. Take it seriously every time.
Other signs worth knowing: a hissing sound near a pipe, an appliance connection, or the meter. Dead or yellowing grass in a line over a buried gas run when everything around it is green. A burner flame that has gone yellow and lazy instead of crisp blue. A gas bill that climbed with no change in how you live.
If you smell gas strongly, the sequence is short. Get everybody out of the building. Do not flip a light switch, do not unplug anything, do not start a vehicle in an attached garage, and leave the door open behind you. Once you are outside and away, call the gas utility’s emergency line and then call us. Do not go back in to check anything.
For a faint smell that comes and goes near one appliance, shut that appliance off at its valve and call for gas line repair. We will find it with a detector rather than guessing at it.
What our install visit looks like
Somebody comes out and looks at the appliance or the spec sheet for what you are putting in, finds the meter, and traces the existing gas system to see what is already on it. That walk is where we learn whether this is a simple branch or a bigger job, and we would rather find that out standing in your yard than halfway through the work.
From there we size the run, pick the material and the route, and give you a real price before we start. If the meter or the existing trunk is the limiting factor, you hear that on the first visit, not after the pipe is in the ground.
Then we pull the permit, run and support the pipe, bond it where CSST is involved, cap it, and pressure test it. The inspector comes out. Once it passes, we make the appliance connection, leak check the connection with solution, light the appliance, and confirm it is running clean. You get the paperwork.

Questions we get about adding a gas line
Q. Can I just tie into the gas line closest to where I need it? Only if that section of pipe is sized to carry the new appliance on top of everything already downstream of it, and that requires measuring the system rather than assuming. Tapping the nearest convenient line is the most common cause of appliances that run poorly after a gas addition, and the symptoms usually show up on the older appliances rather than the new one.
Q. Do I need a permit to run gas to a grill or a fire pit? In most East Texas jurisdictions, yes. Permanent gas piping is permitted work regardless of what it feeds, and outdoor lines are included. Your local code office can confirm the requirements for your address, and we handle the permit as part of the job so you are not chasing it.
Q. Which is better, black iron or CSST? They are both correct in the right place. Black iron is the choice for exposed runs and anywhere the pipe could get hit, like a garage or a shop. CSST is faster and cleaner for long concealed runs through framing and attics. Plenty of jobs use both. CSST has to be bonded to the electrical ground, which is not optional.
Q. How long does adding a gas line usually take? A straightforward branch to a range or a dryer is often a single day of work plus the inspection. An outdoor kitchen, a generator, or a run that needs a new line from the meter takes longer, and the schedule depends partly on when the inspector can get out. Q. What do I do if I smell gas right now? Get everyone out of the building without touching any switch, plug, or appliance, and leave the door open. From outside and away from the house, call the gas utility’s emergency number, then call a plumber. Do not go back inside to look for the source.
