Two trucks can pull up to the same slow drain and do two completely different things to it. One runs a steel cable down the line and gets your water moving again in twenty minutes. The other pulls a high pressure hose off a reel and washes the inside of the pipe down to bare wall. Both are legitimate. Both have a place. And the difference between them is the difference between a drain that runs today and a drain that runs next year.
Homeowners around Kilgore, Longview, and Tyler ask us which one they need, and the honest answer is that it depends on what is in the pipe and what shape the pipe is in. That is not a dodge. It is the whole point, and anybody who answers before looking is guessing with your money.
What a cable machine is actually doing in there
A drain cable, what most people call a snake, is a coiled steel line with a cutting head on the end. A motor spins it while the operator feeds it down the pipe. When the head reaches the blockage it chews into it, and when it breaks through, water starts moving and the pressure differential pulls the loose material down the line.
Notice what that describes. The cable makes a hole. In a clog of hair, wipes, or a wad of grease, that hole might be the diameter of the cable head, which can be a lot smaller than the pipe. Water moving again feels like the problem is solved, and often the problem genuinely is solved, because whatever caused the clog was a one time event that got flushed on through.
That is the honest case for cabling and it covers a lot of calls. A kid’s toy in a toilet line. A single kitchen backup after a holiday. Roots that have just started to intrude at one joint. Cabling is faster, it needs less setup, it works in small lines that a jetter hose cannot reach well, and it works where a jetter would be the wrong tool anyway, like a tub drain or a lavatory arm.
The limit is the pipe wall. A cable does very little to what is stuck to the sides. It carves a channel through the middle and leaves the coating behind, which is fine when there is no coating and a real problem when there is.
What jetting does that a cable cannot
A hydro jetter pushes water through a hose at pressure, out through a nozzle with jets angled backward. Those rear facing jets do two jobs at once. They drive the hose forward up the line under its own thrust, and they blast the pipe wall behind them as the hose is pulled back out, scouring the buildup loose and flushing it downstream.
The result is different in kind. Where a cable leaves a hole through the blockage, jetting takes the pipe back to something close to its original inside diameter. Grease that has cooled and hardened onto the walls comes off. Soap scum and mineral scale come off. Sand and silt that has settled in a belly gets flushed. Fine roots that have found a joint get cut and washed out along with the debris they were catching.
That last one matters here more than people expect. Clay tile sewer laterals with mortared joints are common under older houses and older streets in this part of East Texas, and roots do not break into clay pipe by force. They find the joint, follow the moisture, and fan out inside. Cable them and you cut the root off flush with the pipe wall, which is like mowing grass. Jet them and you remove the mass and clean the surface the next growth would anchor to. Neither one changes the fact that there is an opening at that joint, which is a separate conversation and we will get to it.
When each one is the right call
Cabling first is usually the right move when this is the first time this drain has ever backed up, when the problem is at a single fixture rather than the whole house, when the line is small diameter, or when you have water on the floor right now and the priority is getting the household functional again. Nobody needs a lecture about pipe wall condition while their kitchen is flooding. Clear it, then talk.
Jetting is the right move when the same drain has backed up more than once, when multiple fixtures are slow at the same time, when it is a kitchen line and there is any history of grease, when the line has sand or silt in it, when roots are involved, or when the last three cablings each bought less time than the one before. That last pattern is the clearest signal there is. If clearing used to hold for eighteen months and now it holds for four, the pipe wall is closing in and cutting a hole through the middle is treating a symptom.
There is also a maintenance case that has nothing to do with an active clog. A restaurant line or a heavily used house line jetted on a schedule simply does not back up, because the buildup never reaches the point where it can catch something. That is cheaper and a lot less dramatic than emergency drain cleaning on a Friday night.
Why we want a camera in older pipe before we jet it
Here is where we are going to be blunt, because this is where the industry gets sloppy. Jetting is powerful, and powerful is only good when you know what you are pointing it at. A jetter working in sound PVC or cast iron with wall left in it is doing exactly what it should. A jetter working in a clay line that has already lost sections, or in a cast iron line that has rotted through at the bottom, can turn a bad pipe into an open pipe.
So on any line where we do not know the material or the age, or where the house is old enough that clay or early cast iron is likely, we want a camera down there first. The camera tells us what the pipe is made of, whether the walls are intact, where the joints are, whether there is a belly holding standing water, and whether we are looking at a blockage in a good pipe or a good pipe’s worth of debris sitting in a failing one.
That footage also settles arguments. You get to see the same picture we see, which means the recommendation stops being a matter of trusting a stranger in your yard. Stephen started Odyssey with his wife Gicel in 2022 specifically because he had watched how some outfits around here handle that moment, and the fix for it is simple: show people the pipe.
Camera work also protects you from the opposite error, which is paying for a full sewer job you did not need. A camera that shows a clean clay line with one root intrusion at one joint is telling you to fix one joint, not to replace a hundred feet of pipe.
Grease lines in restaurants and commercial kitchens
Commercial kitchen drains are their own category and cabling barely touches them. What goes down a kitchen line is hot, which means fats and oils are liquid when they leave the sink and solid by the time they are twenty feet out under the parking lot. They plate onto the pipe wall in layers, cooling and hardening, and the line narrows a little every service. Cook long enough and a four inch line has a two inch hole through the middle of it.
Run a cable through that and you get a cable sized channel through the grease. Water moves. Everybody is relieved. Then in a few weeks the channel closes back up, because you never removed the grease, you only made a tunnel in it. This is why so many kitchens end up on a first name basis with a drain company and never understand why the problem keeps coming back.
Commercial hydro jetting removes the deposit instead of tunneling through it, and on a kitchen line that is the only approach that actually resets the clock. Most kitchens we work with end up on an interval, and the interval gets set by what the line looks like on the camera rather than by a number somebody made up. A busy fryer heavy kitchen and a sandwich shop do not need the same schedule. Interceptor maintenance matters too, because a jetted line downstream of a neglected grease trap is going to load right back up.
The repeat clog that means the pipe itself is the problem
There is a pattern worth learning to recognize, because it saves people from spending years paying to clear the same line.
The pattern is this: the interval between clearings gets shorter, and the blockage keeps coming back to the same spot on the line. Sometimes there is a smell in the yard, or one patch of grass that is greener and softer than the rest, or a section of it that stays wet after everything else has dried out. Sometimes there is a low spot in the floor or the slab over the run.
That combination usually means the line is no longer just dirty. It means there is a break, a separated joint, an offset where two sections no longer line up, or a belly where the pipe has sagged and water stands in it permanently. Debris collects at that defect every single time because the defect is what catches it. No amount of cleaning fixes a shape problem in the pipe, and any company that keeps cleaning a line that has a documented break in it is selling you a subscription.
When the camera shows that, the conversation moves to sewer line repair, and how big that job is depends entirely on how much of the run is bad. One separated joint under a yard is a spot dig. A clay line that has shifted in a dozen places over sixty years is a different scope. We would rather show you the footage and let the pipe make the argument than talk you into either one.
What it looks like when we show up
We start by asking what the drain has been doing and for how long, because the history tells us more than the first look does. Then we open a cleanout and get eyes on it. If the line is blocked solid we usually clear enough to restore flow before doing anything else, since a camera cannot see through standing sewage anyway.
Once water is moving we camera the run, and that footage drives everything after. If the pipe is sound and coated, jetting is the recommendation and we will say why. If the pipe is sound and the clog was a one time thing, we will tell you that too, and you do not need the bigger service. If the camera finds a defect, we locate it, mark it, and talk about what fixing it involves before anybody starts quoting numbers. You get a real price before we start, not a number that grows once the truck is already in your driveway.

Questions we get about jetting and cabling
Q. Will hydro jetting damage my pipes? Not in sound pipe. Jetting is used routinely in PVC, cast iron, and healthy clay without harm. The risk is in pipe that has already failed, where sections are missing or the walls have rotted through. That is exactly why we camera older lines before jetting them instead of guessing. A jetter aimed at a known good pipe is safe, and a jetter aimed at an unknown one is a gamble we do not take with your house.
Q. How is jetting different from having my drain snaked? A cable punches an opening through the blockage and gets water moving. Jetting washes the pipe wall itself, taking off grease, scale, and root material so the line goes back to close to its full diameter. Cabling treats the clog. Jetting treats the condition that keeps producing clogs.
Q. How often should a restaurant have its kitchen line jetted? It depends on volume and menu, and the camera should set it rather than a generic schedule. A fryer heavy kitchen loads a line far faster than a place doing cold prep. Most kitchens land on a recurring interval, and staying ahead of it costs less than closing during service because the floor drains came up.
Q. Can jetting clear tree roots from a sewer line? Yes, jetting cuts and flushes root mass better than a cable does, because it removes the material instead of shearing it off at the wall. What it does not do is close the opening the roots came through. If roots keep returning to the same joint, the joint is compromised and the durable fix is repair at that spot.
Q. My drain backs up every few months. What does that mean? A shrinking interval between backups almost always means the pipe wall is closing in or there is a defect catching debris at the same place every time. A camera separates those two, and they lead to different work. What it is not is bad luck, and it will not fix itself.
